Whether celebrating a saint, a national holiday or even a neighborhood, you can count on parades, fireworks, dancing, costumes, music and, of course, debauchery. Plus, Barcelona hosts tons of music festivals each year showcasing genres from rock to flamenco, jazz and classical, and is home to two of Spain's biggest music festivals: Primavera Sound and Sonar.
FEBRUARY-MARCH: Carnaval
The parades held in Barcelona for Carnaval are some of Spain's most lively and impressive. The nearby beach town of Sitges is one of the best spots to get into the spirit, where the thriving gay community puts on an incredible show and throws parties lasting "til the sun comes up".
JUNE: Sant Joan
While it's held on the day of Saint John the Baptist, the "Nit de Foc" (night of fire) is really just an excuse to have an unforgettable party.
AUGUST: Fest Major de Gràcia
The historically creative and bohemiam neighborhood of Gràcia hosts the city's most colorful, lively Fest de Barri with parades, fireworks, live outdoor music and arts & crafts galore.
SEPTEMBER: La Mercé
La Mercé, celebrating Barcelona's patroness, is perhaps the most important festival of the year. Enjoy four days of free outdoor concerts, along with street arts, acrobats, firey displays, food fairs and much more. Not to be missed!
DECEMBER - JANUARY: Christmas, New Years, Three Wise Men
From incredible Nativity scenes and Christmas caroles to New Year's festivities and the January 5th parade welcoming the three wise men (who bring gifts, not Santa Claus) into the city, Barcelona is an incredible place to experience the winter holidays.
